Privacy Policy
Last updated:
AlertWatch World respects the privacy of its visitors and aims to be clear about what information is — and is not — collected when you use the website.
AlertWatch World is an independent public-information project. This Privacy Policy describes the current website at the time shown above.
If the site’s technology or services change, this policy may also be updated.
On this page
1. Information AlertWatch World does not currently collect through the website
AlertWatch World currently does not provide:
- user accounts or login systems;
- newsletter registration;
- comments or community submissions;
- a website contact form;
- browser geolocation requests;
- advertising;
- analytics or visitor-measurement services;
- tracking pixels;
- personalized advertising;
- social-media widgets; or
- embedded third-party media.
AlertWatch World also does not currently use application code to store information in:
- cookies;
- local storage;
- session storage;
- IndexedDB; or
- service-worker or Cache Storage systems.
2. Information processed when you visit the site
Like most websites, ordinary technical information must be exchanged for pages and resources to be delivered to your browser.
Depending on the service involved, this can include information such as:
- your network or IP address;
- the page or resource requested;
- browser or device information sent in HTTP headers;
- request date and time;
- referrer information, where supplied by your browser; and
- technical information needed to deliver a network response.
AlertWatch World does not use its own visitor-tracking system to build individual visitor profiles from this information.
Some of this technical processing occurs through third-party infrastructure described below.
3. Website hosting
AlertWatch World is hosted using a third-party website hosting provider.
When you visit the website, your browser communicates with infrastructure used to deliver the site’s HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and published data files.
As part of ordinary website delivery and security operations, the hosting provider may process technical information such as your network or IP address, requested pages or resources, browser information, and request timing.
AlertWatch World does not operate its own visitor-tracking system and does not use hosting information to build individual visitor profiles.
AlertWatch World does not control all provider-side logging, retention, or other processing performed by third-party infrastructure.
The hosting provider operates under its own privacy and security practices.
4. Interactive maps
The Weather service includes an interactive map.
OpenStreetMap
Map tiles are requested from OpenStreetMap’s tile service when the Weather map is displayed.
Your browser therefore communicates directly with OpenStreetMap’s tile infrastructure.
A tile request can reveal technical information such as:
- your network address;
- browser request information; and
- which map tiles are requested.
The requested tiles can also indicate which parts of the map are being viewed and at what approximate zoom level.
This is not the same as AlertWatch requesting your GPS location. AlertWatch World does not currently use the browser Geolocation API to determine your physical location.
OpenStreetMap and its service providers have their own privacy practices.
OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy
Leaflet and UNPKG
The Weather map uses the Leaflet mapping library.
The current site loads Leaflet’s JavaScript and CSS through UNPKG. This means a visitor’s browser requests those files from UNPKG’s delivery infrastructure when loading the Weather service.
Those network requests may include ordinary browser and network metadata.
AlertWatch World does not use Leaflet itself as a visitor-tracking service.
The publisher homepage and informational pages do not load Leaflet or Weather map resources.
5. Weather alert data sources
AlertWatch World retrieves official weather alert information through automated server-side workflows.
The principal current sources are:
- U.S. National Weather Service;
- Environment and Climate Change Canada;
- Environment and Climate Change Canada Marine; and
- WMO/SWIC international warning sources.
Visitors’ browsers do not currently query these weather-source APIs directly.
AlertWatch’s automated systems retrieve and prepare the source information, after which visitors download AlertWatch’s published data files from the website.
This means ordinary use of the Weather dashboard does not require your browser to send information directly to NWS, ECCC, or WMO merely to load AlertWatch’s alert records.
6. Cookies
AlertWatch World does not currently set its own cookies.
The website’s application code contains no current cookie-management or cookie-based preference system.
However, AlertWatch cannot guarantee that every hosting, network, or third-party provider never uses cookies or similar technologies independently.
Any such provider-side processing is governed by the applicable provider’s own practices and policies.
If AlertWatch World later introduces services that use cookies — such as advertising, analytics, consent management, or additional third-party functionality — this Privacy Policy will be updated as appropriate.
7. Browser storage and preferences
AlertWatch World does not currently save visitor preferences using:
- local storage;
- session storage;
- IndexedDB; or
- other AlertWatch-managed persistent browser databases.
Some interface state exists temporarily in browser memory while a page is open.
For example, filters, map state, menu state, or selected dashboard options may exist while you use the page.
The selected Weather dataset can also appear in the page URL and therefore in normal browser history.
These behaviours are different from AlertWatch creating a stored user profile or persistent preference record.
8. Browser and network caching
Web browsers and network infrastructure may temporarily cache website resources as part of ordinary web operation.
AlertWatch also uses normal browser caching behaviour for some published data resources.
This is not the same as AlertWatch maintaining a personal user database.
Some status requests are deliberately configured to avoid normal caching so that publication-status information can be checked more directly.
9. Email correspondence
AlertWatch World provides a public contact email address rather than a website submission form.
If you choose to email AlertWatch World, information you voluntarily provide may include:
- your email address;
- your name, if you include it;
- the contents of your message;
- attachments; and
- other information you choose to provide.
Email transmission also involves the email providers used by the sender and recipient.
Correspondence may be retained only as reasonably necessary to:
- respond to your inquiry;
- investigate or resolve an issue;
- maintain appropriate records; or
- meet applicable legal obligations.
Please avoid sending sensitive personal information unless it is necessary for your inquiry.
Privacy contact:
10. No sale of personal information
AlertWatch World does not currently operate a system for collecting visitor personal information for sale.
AlertWatch World does not currently sell personal information collected through the website.
Because the site currently has no advertising, analytics, account system, tracking profiles, or user-submission database, it does not maintain the type of advertising or behavioural profile commonly associated with targeted advertising systems.
11. Advertising and analytics
AlertWatch World currently uses no advertising service and no analytics service.
In particular, the current website does not contain:
- Google AdSense;
- Google Analytics;
- Google Tag Manager;
- advertising pixels; or
- other visitor-measurement trackers.
If advertising or analytics are introduced later, this Privacy Policy will be reviewed and updated before or as part of that implementation.
Additional consent or privacy controls may also be introduced where required.
12. Children
AlertWatch World is a general public-information website and is not designed specifically for children.
The website does not currently provide accounts, social features, user-generated content, or forms intended to collect information from children.
If that functionality changes in the future, the privacy implications will be reviewed before implementation.
13. External links
AlertWatch World may provide links to official weather authorities, government websites, source documentation, OpenStreetMap, Leaflet, WMO/SWIC, and other external resources.
Following an external link takes you to another organization’s website.
AlertWatch World does not control the privacy practices, security practices, content, or data handling of external websites.
Visitors should consult the applicable external site’s policies where appropriate.
14. Security
AlertWatch World aims to minimize privacy risk partly by collecting as little visitor information as practical.
No website or network transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
AlertWatch does not make an absolute guarantee of security.
Where personal information is voluntarily provided through email, reasonable care should be taken in handling that correspondence.
15. International visitors
AlertWatch World is accessible internationally.
Because hosting, map resources, software delivery, and email services can involve infrastructure operated in different countries, technical information may be processed in jurisdictions outside the visitor’s own country.
Third-party providers operate under their own privacy policies and legal obligations.
AlertWatch World does not currently maintain a visitor account or profiling database that attempts to track individuals across countries.
16. Changes to this Privacy Policy
AlertWatch World’s services may evolve.
This Privacy Policy may be updated if the site adds or changes services such as:
- analytics;
- advertising;
- contact forms;
- user accounts;
- user submissions;
- additional third-party resources;
- consent-management tools; or
- other data-processing features.
The Last updated date at the top of this page will be changed when the policy is materially revised.
